Framingham

Framingham is all about small batch, handcrafted winemaking and limited quantities. When Framingham wines are sold out, they’re gone. Their focus is on white aromatics styled to accompany food. Nestled in 17 hectares of vineyards and beautifully manicured gardens, with spectacular views of the Richmond Ranges, Framingham’s winery and cellar door are open seven days a week. Explore the Framingham range, with its strong tradition of balance, texture and complexity, as well as the boundary-pushing F-series, in the deco-style wooden panelled tasting room. Or enjoy the sunshine in the sheltered courtyard, where the roses are as fragrant as the wines you’ll be sipping on.

Forrest

Just outside of Renwick, in Marlborough, John and Brigid Forrest have been crafting wines since the late 1980’s. Coming back to his family roots, the Forrest have farmed the region for generations. After succesful careers in cinetific research and medicine, the young family came back from living and working overseas to get a start on a fairly green New Zealand wine industry. The first vintage for Forrest Wines came in 1990, when an over filled a red wine fermenter “accident” resulted in a trophy winner Merlot Rosé. Fast forward almost 30 years, many awards and accolades, 5 labels and vineyards across the country, Forrest is set for generations.

Himmelsfeld

Established in 1991 by Beth Eggers, Himmelsfeld Vineyard is part of a working farm, nestled in the heart of the picturesque Upper Moutere. Himmelsfeld is one of the smallest vineyards in the country and, as a truly boutique producer, they are never in a hurry to release their wines. Cellaring is what makes them stand out from the rest – letting you experience great wine when it is ready and not a moment before. This can be done at the cellar door, or ‘The Wine Loft’, based in an old workman’s cottage. These tastings are personalised, with Beth as your guide. Himmelsfeld’s philosophy has always been to grow wines as organically and sustainably as possible; part of this is using 100 Romney sheep for weed control. They, too, are eager to be a part of your Himmelsfeld experience.

Brightwater Vineyards

Brightwater Vineyards has grown up together with the Nelson wine region. When we planted our first vines in 1993, the Nelson wine industry was just a toddler, taking a few independent but unsteady steps. Since then we have seen many more wineries come on board, as the region’s self-confidence has grown together with the reputation of the wines produced here.

AMISFIELD

This stunning yet unforgiving high country presents its challenges. Amisfield founder John Darby – spurred on by fond memories of childhood holidays in Central Otago – was determined to master the harsh elements. By the late 1980s, he was convinced that this dramatic landscape presented the perfect conditions for cool-climate viticulture. After an exhaustive search, he discovered Amisfield Farm, formerly a merino sheep station. The first vines were planted in 1999. Nearing two decades on, they continue to thrive in these unrelenting conditions. With the team now spanning generations, it’s clear that like the mountains that surround it, Amisfield will be here for some time to come.

AKARUA

Central Otago, as a viticultural region, arguably more than any other New Zealand wine growing region, has rapidly gained international market and media credibility for producing pinot noir. Pioneers in the 1980’s such as Alan Brady at Gibbston, Vernon & Sue Burgess at Alexandra and Rolf & Lois Mills in Wanaka, had defied all nay-sayers by producing serious wines under the most challenging circumstances and this activated a surge of enthusiasm and investment in the industry over the next two decades.

Felton Road

Considerable research by Stewart Elms (hence the Elm tree logo) in 1991 identified the north facing slopes at the end of Felton Road, Bannockburn as being one of the warmest and most ideal sites in Central Otago for the growing and production of premium wine. Heat summation data and soil maps of the area, developed as a result of the construction of the Clyde Dam, were helpful in this decision. The three different soils identified are free draining with low fertility characteristics, and combined with the unique climate, are ideal for the production of premium quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.
